Overall Opinion:
SkinMedica Retinol Complex is one of our favorite retinol creams currently available.
We used the 0.5% concentration which worked well and didn’t produce any irritation or redness that some retinol products can.
There aren’t many downsides with this one although it was a little bit sticky after it dried and the smell may not appeal to some people.
But overall, this is a very good wrinkle cream that can do a good job on fine lines, rough skin and discoloration.
Detailed Opinion:
Texture/Feel
SkinMedica Retinol Complex comes out of the tube as a yellow-colored lotion– which is an unusual color for a retinol cream!
It feels slick and pretty lightweight.
Application
The application of this one was very straightforward and simple.
It spreads on evenly and doesn’t require too much effort :)
Drying Time
The drying time on SkinMedica Retinol Complex is about average when compared to other retinol cream.
After about 5-7 minutes it felt completely dry.
It was a little bit sticky after it dried but nothing too annoying.
Smell
This product has a very light, fresh smell to it.
It also smells a bit floral to us– but again, it’s very light and not super noticeable after 10-20 minutes.
Short Term Results
The short term results we got from this one were very good.
Our skin felt smooth and refreshed the following morning.
Longer Term Results
Over time, we were happy with the results this retinol cream gave us.
Like with most good retinol products, our fine lines were diminished and our skin felt smoother.
It also evened out the coloring a bit.
Ingredients Analysis
SkinMedica Retinol Complex comes in a 0.5% concentration of retinol and a full 1%.
We liked using the 0.5% as we didn’t experience any irritation or dryness.
This product contains a skin conditioning agent (oryza sativa bran cera) that may help dampen any irritation that retinol can sometimes produce.
Lastly, we noticed a microalgae on the label that acts as a free radical scavenger– something that’s very good for the skin.
Price
SkinMedica Retinol Complex 0.5 costs $75.00 for a one-ounce tube.
Obviously, that’s very expensive, but at least in this case you’re getting a pretty effective product!
Guarantee
SkinMedica offers a 30 day return period, which is good.
You do have to jump through some hoops including calling them, getting an RMA and sending back the original order slip.
But at least they offer a guarantee.
